Student Leaders Provide Crucial Relief in Jajarkot Earthquake Aftermath

ANNFSU Volunteers Outpace Government Efforts, ANNFSU’s Relief Operations in Full Swing

Jajarkot, 23, November

In the wake of the devastating earthquake in Jajarkot, residents express gratitude as volunteers from the All Nepal National Free Students Union (ANNFSU) take the lead in relief efforts. In contrast to government mechanisms, these student leaders are providing essential aid directly to the earthquake victims.

ANNFSU, the public organization affiliated with the Unified Marxist-Leninist (UML) party, is actively engaged in the earthquake-affected area. Central Vice President Narayan Gharti and General Secretary Naresh Rokaya, at the helm of ANNFSU, are overseeing operations to clear debris and recover buried items in Bheri Municipality 3 Pipaldanda of Jajarkot.

Working tirelessly from 6 am to 6 pm, ANNFSU leaders are responding to the demands and risks identified by locals. General Secretary Rokaya highlighted their efforts, stating, “We have been in the earthquake-affected area since October 1st, working to remove debris, recover buried goods, and construct temporary shelters for the victims.”

Under the directive of the party centre, Vice President Gharti revealed the formation of a volunteer group of 25 people deployed to the earthquake-affected regions. The team is actively collaborating with various organizations to facilitate restoration and renovation efforts.

Residents of Pipaldanda, where ANNFSU is operating, laud the effectiveness of ANNFSU compared to government initiatives. Vikram Shah, a local resident, remarked, “The army and police attempted to clear our destroyed houses but left without starting the work. ANNFSU succeeded in removing the damaged goods when they arrived.”

Expressing gratitude, Narad Karki, another local resident, acknowledged the student leaders for their impactful support during this challenging time. “Political affiliations aside, they have joined hands in our suffering, providing significant assistance. We will never forget this act,” he stated.

In the ongoing relief operations, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) has successfully cleared debris from 16 high-risk houses and constructed two temporary towers in the area. General Secretary Rokaya emphasized the challenges posed by the dangerous condition of the houses and acknowledged the collaborative efforts of leaders from ex-military organizations in the relief work.
